Stop Making These 5 Dropshipping Mistakes In 2023

Dropshipping mistakes 101:

Dropshipping is a great business model for both experienced and newbies to kickstart the online presence and generate some serious revenue.

It’s getting prevalent in 2021 and is likely to grow continuously at scale in the upcoming years.

But, there are some mistakes that beginners make, that can really affect their overall reputation in the near future.

With that being said, I’m going to share 5 dropshipping mistakes that beginners make, and more importantly, how to fix them.

So, without any further ado, let’s get right into it.

1. Don’t Go After The Hot Market

Many people who start off with dropshipping do it to make money right away, and there’s nothing wrong with it. The problem is that they go after the wrong marketplace and tend to forget their passion.

I’ve seen many drop shippers starting and then messing everything up just because they picked the hot market. To clarify more and give you some context, I’ll give the example of women’s clothing, or women’s bikinis, and stuff like that. But they don’t realize that a lot of other people are trying or doing the exact same thing. This can be a headache for you in the long run because of so much competition and saturation in the market.

Hence, my suggestion to you will be that do the comprehensive research on your passion and then dive in strategically to get the maximum results.

To generate more revenue, maybe you can do it down the line, but while just starting off, definitely don’t go that way.

2. Not Charging For Shipping

Now, this is another dropshipping mistakes that I’ve come across on the board. Many of the newcomers lose thousands of dollars for no reason because of the fear of adding shipping charges on the products.

It’s probably because they see these big marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, and others offering free shipping on their products. And they think adding shipping cost is going to throw people away. But that’s not true. It generally doesn’t have any effect on your sales.

If people are precisely interested in the product, they wouldn’t mind giving those few extra bucks for the item to be shipped.

If you have a product priced $7.99, consider adding 2.95 shipping costs to it (just an example), or else you’ll lose a ton of money on all orders combined.

So, surely charge for shipping.

3. Stopping Facebook Ads

Avoid Dropshipping Mistakes - Don't Stop Your Facebook Ads

This one might seem somewhat funny to a lot of you, but still, it is a mistake that beginners usually make.

While running Facebook ads in the very beginning, they just sit in front of the computer, trying to see everything every 10 seconds.

This is probably because of overexcitement or fear. But always remember – you won’t be seeing sales right away. It’s going to take some time.

What I would suggest is just get out of your computer screen as allow the ads to run at least 24-48 hours to let the algorithm play by itself.

Hence, take a breathe and let it happen. If you don’t get results, don’t stop doing Facebook ads. Decide to adjust and optimize both of your ads and website for better conversions.

By the way, here are the eight common Facebook ads mistakes that beginners make – check those now and confirm if you’re doing the same thing.

4. Not Setting Up Proper Backend Sales Process

The far majority of the people are focusing on generating two to three dollars of profit upfront (could be even five or then, but that is not the concern) and not on the backend.

As a businessperson, you always have to make sure that the majority of money is made on the backend, not frontend.

You definitely want to set up an email sequence for your customers or leads, trying to convince them to buy over and over again from your store.

It’s going to generate a sustainable review stream which could be very scalable.

Setting up an automated backend sales process could be achieved by an amazing tool called – GetResponse, which I highly recommend trying.

5. Pretty Website That Doesn’t Convert

A pretty website that doesn't convert.

The fifth mistake is having a damn good looking website but not optimized to convert.

Sure, designing is essential for your brand or business, but it also has to be good enough for converting visitors into customers.

There’s a huge difference between what you like and what the customers like.

So, you have to leverage conversion rate optimization for your store to have the most converting store that respects buyers by drawing their attention to the right point.

Also, don’t include a lot of fancy call to actions on one page as that can lead to distractions and low conversions.
